Married
By Mistake - by Laura V. Hilton
1902
Thomas Hale has retired to his family’s home on Mackinac Island for solitude while he works through the
rejection of a publicly failed romance that has ruined his good name. When he
is asked to pose as a happy bridegroom for an advertisement for his good friend’s
resort, Thomas is reluctant to even pretend he might have a second chance at
love.
Bessie O’Hara’s cousins have proposed a vacation to Mackinac Island to meet suitable husbands, but the
ongoing social interaction doesn’t appeal to her at all. She’d much rather
spend time alone with a good book, her piano, or even a walk along the beach
instead of dancing the night away and batting her eyes at prospective beaux.
When Bessie is recruited to pose as a “bride” for an advertisement, she agrees
only to get out of a social event she doesn’t care to attend.
But things don’t go according to plan. When the unthinkable
happens, Bessie and Thomas must decide whether to continue the charade or walk
away since either choice could ruin them if the news got out.
